How to become a Taxi Driver

To become a Taxi Driver in NSW you must first pass the eligibility criteria set by the Ministry of Transport. These are the requirements that applicants must meet before a taxi-cab driver authority can be issued by the Ministry, and are contained in the driver authorisation information package.

To apply an applicant must be at least 20 years of age and must:

hold a NSW driver licence (fully unrestricted)
held an Australian driver licence for at least 12 months
have read and understood the criteria, conditions and procedures for authorisation as outlined in the authorisation package. Click here for the link to the information package.
have attended and successfully completed an assessment of English Language, applicable to taxi-cab drivers at the Adult Migrant English Service (AMES)
have had a health assessment performed by a medical practitioner, and completed the form. Click here to view and/or download copies of the medical assessment forms.
have completed and signed the application form and declaration, and attached all of the documents requested. Click here to view and/or download a copy of the applications form.
have satisfied the Director-General that they:

are of good repute and in all other respects a fit and proper person to be the driver of a taxi-cab, and
have sufficient responsibility to drive a taxi-cab in accordance with law and custom.

NOTE: For applicants who wish to work outside the Sydney metropolitan area, some of the requirements for becoming a driver are different.

** Note: Once you pass the eligibility criteria you will receive a clearance number. This process can take up to 6 weeks from the time the applications are received at the Ministry of Transport. You may then attend the Taxicare Plus training course.
